As we near Skyenet's first birthday, we started piloting the service in Drumfearn in May 2015, it's a perfect time to thank all our network's seventy seven users for their support and to give an update on where we currently stand.
For our network to grow we require more capacity and we are aiming to add to our current provision by;
1) Being involved in the West Highland Access Network (WHAN) project. This research project spearheaded by the University of Edinburgh and made possible by funding from Community Broadband Scotland (CBS), aims to connect community networks and to provide them with a source of backhaul (through a leased fibre line in Mallaig). The community groups and university staff involved in this project have made great progress with infrastructure changes and additions but everything is being hampered by BT/Open Reach's involvement in the cabling work in Mallaig. This work has been subject to significant delays and is an source of extreme frustration for all involved. A quarterly update will be produced soon for WHAN and we will share this as relevant.
2)Investigating new sources of backhaul either through our current provider or via our connections with a community network operators organisation.
In the interim we are kept busy with running our network as it stands currently. Over the past couple of weeks our partners, MacPherson Electrical, have moved a mast and upgraded another with remote support from the office.
We strive to provide excellent customer support and welcome feedback either through our website or directly to the office on firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone, 01471 844 773. We post regular updates on the Trust's Facebook page, will keep this blog updated and email all subscribers as necessary.
If you have any questions we could cover in a blog post - let us know! Perhaps you'd like to know what 'the Dude' you've heard about actually is or how the service works? Remember there is additional info on the website and files, such as the Welcome Guide, are available to download from there too.
